Sesquicentennial
The Historical Society of Maries County is a non-profit organization, founded in 1956, for the purpose of collecting and preserving information regarding Maries County. Through its publications, special programs, and exhibits, the Society perpetuates the history and traditions of Maries County.

The Historical Society Research Room
 

The Historical Society Research Room is located in the basement of the Maries County Courthouse in Vienna and is open every Wednesday 1-4 p.m.

 

Finding Your Maries County Roots

 Research in person:

The Research Room, located in the basement of the Maries County Court House, is open every Wed. between l:00 – 4:00 p.m. and is free to all researchers, including non-members. Volunteers are available to assist researchers. Due to the variety of resource material in our collections as well as limited staff resources, a personal visit is strongly encouraged.

Research by mail:

A comprehensive search can be conducted by our volunteer genealogist for a fee of $10 per research hour, with a two hour minimum charge. Photo copies are 25 cents each. Payment is required in advance.

Successful research results cannot be guaranteed. The more information you give us to start, the better the chances are for a successful search. Please give us as much specific information as possible for the families for whom you are seeking information including:

First and last name

Family: such as siblings, spouses and children

Places and dates: births, deaths, marriages and residences

 New Cemetery Book

The Historical Society of Maries County is in the process of creating a Volumn II Cemetery book with all new information. The society is asking for the community's help in locating old cemeteries and burial sites that may not have been identified in the first cemetery book printed in 1986. If you have information to submit please contact the Historical Society at PO Box 289, Vienna, MO 65582.

The Maries Countian/Membership - An annual subscription of $15.00 includes membership in the Historical Society of Maries County. This illustrated newsletter features articles from a myriad of sources and contains material of value to those interested in local history as well as the researcher of genealogical data on Maries County families. Its pages bring a wealth of information from past newspapers, birth, marriage and death records, and transcriptions from various collections and compilations of known facts and reminiscences. Material is gleaned from old ledgers, documents and registers to guide the reader through Maries County's past. Included are items and stories of general interest and communications from members in all areas of the county. Previous issues of The Maries Countian are available for $4.00 each.
